Return of the Speaker

That didn’t last very long.  Former House Speaker Jim Amann was out of state government for exactly nine days.

The New London Day is reporting that Amann has now been hired by his successor, Speaker Christopher Donovan of Meriden, to serve as an “adviser.”

Amann, who is running for governor, will be paid $120,000 annually for this new post, created at a time when Connecticut faces a $1 billion deficit this fiscal year and a $6 billion deficit the next.

Despite this crisis, last Wednesday evening House Democrats refused to delay $87 million in pay raises for state employees, cut funding to the taxpayer-funded campaign finance program that now pays for their bumper stickers and lawn signs, and then refused to cut their own pay even by 5% as proposed by Republicans.

House Republican Leader Larry Cafero was quoted in the New London Day in response to the surprise development:

“I’m dumbfounded,” Cafero said. “We started off the session with a question: Will there be any change from business as usual. I think we just got our answer.”
